Whats New in Gas Alarms

With around 15 years' experience in industrial gas detection, Nereus Alarms has launched the new WaterGuard range of gas alarm systems, which are ideally suited to motor and sailing yachts, fishing boats, charter and small commercial vessels.

This latest range of gas alarms offers a wide choice of configurations to give the optimum level of protection for each individual vessel or situation. It includes:

  • 1, 2 or 3 gas sensors per control panel
  • Unique remote waterproof LPG sensors, which can be mounted in bilges
  • Optional carbon monoxide sensor - ideal for gas heating systems
  • Sensors extendable up to 25m
  • Universal 12 or 24V operation
  • Optional gas valve control system - a solenoid control valve
  • External alarm sounder output
  • Display can be surface-mounted or flush-mounted with brackets included
  • Sensors can be surface-mounted or flush-mounted with brackets included
  • Simple operation.

NEW - Waterproof LPG Sensors

This is the single most important technical advancement in recent years and is a unique feature of Nereus Alarms.

Traditional gas sensors are permanently damaged when they get wet and will often give intermittent false alarm outputs, to the annoyance of those aboard. This can result in periods of compromised safety.

As a result, the sensors of most other gas alarm products are often fitted higher in the bilge areas than they really should be to avoid even the slightest chance of them coming into contact with water, resulting in a reduction in their effectiveness for detecting gas in the lowest areas where it is most likely to collect. The sensors used by Nereus Alarms are fully immersion-proof.

These waterproof sensors have been independently tested by a UKAS accredited test laboratory and the IP57 rating has been verified in accordance with EN 60529 (Degree of protection provided by enclosures).

NEW - Temperature Compensated LPG Sensors

Each Nereus LPG sensor is internally compensated for changing ambient temperatures. This ensures stable and reliable performance over the full range of temperatures that the vessel will endure throughout the year.

Most other manufacturers use sensors without temperature compensation which can easily suffer from false alarms at high ambient temperatures (mid-summer when you are using the boat) and very poor sensitivity at low temperatures (mid-winter when the boat can be left for prolonged periods giving ample time for gas to build up to dangerous levels).

NEW - Pre-Calibrated LPG Sensors

Another important innovation of the Nereus Gas Alarms are pre-calibrated LPG sensors.

Most other gas alarm products auto-calibrate the system whenever it is turned on. The problem is that it is possible that the ambient gas level in the atmosphere may already be higher than it should be. In this circumstance, the gas alarm could auto-calibrate and set this level as zero. In order to get the alarm to sound, a much higher concentration of gas might be needed which could be a lot closer to a dangerous level, and reducing the margin of safety.

Nereus LPG sensors are factory-calibrated to 10 per cent LEL. As a comparison, the accepted industry level at which a gas alarm should sound is 25 per cent LEL. The other benefit of these pre-calibrated sensors is that they can be quickly replaced if they get damaged, without compromising the rest of the system.

Sensor Option for Carbon Monoxide - the silent killer.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) is the poisonous gas formed when fuels such as LPG, petrol or diesel are burnt. A faulty cooking appliance or diesel heater can quickly result in the build up of potentially dangerous levels of this fatal gas and because it has no smell, colour or taste most victims never knew there was a problem. The Nereus Gas Alarm Systems are now available with an optional Carbon Monoxide sensor giving you the only reliable way of detecting this silent killer and warning the crew in time.

Optional Gas Control System. (Solenoid Control Valve)

Each of the Nereus Gas Alarm systems is available with a high quality solenoid control valve to allow the gas supply to be shut off at the gas cylinder by pushing a button on the control panel.

The system will also automatically shut the gas supply off whenever an alarm is triggered, giving crewmembers the assurance that the gas supply gas been shut off at the very first sign of a problem.
