What's New in Engine Fire Extinguishers?

FM200 - Safe, Clean and the Fastest Fire Protection Available

Suitable for both petrol and diesel engines, FM200 is a waterless fire suppression system, which is extremely safe for people and equipment.

The agent is a clean, gaseous vapour and importantly, there is no cleaning up of powder, foam or oily residue after use. So electrical and mechanical systems not directly damaged by the fire can usually be used straight away.

Fast and Highly Efficient

FM200 systems reach their optimum extinguishing levels in a matter of seconds, stopping ordinary combustible material fires, electrical, and flammable liquid fires before they cause significant damage.

This is the fastest fire protection available. When fire is extinguished this quickly, it means less damage, lower repair costs, and an extra margin of safety for people.

How it Works

FM200 automatic engine fire extinguishers are activated if abnormal heat energy produced by a fire is detected.

FM200 functions by physically removing the heat from the source of combustion, in a similar way that a refrigerant compound removes heat from the air in a fridge. There is also a chemical reaction. Upon exposure to flames the FM200 breaks down to release 'free radicals' which inhibit the chain reactions responsible for combustion.

Some manufacturers, such as Sea Fire, offer a manual cable activation option, to allow you to activate the fire extinguisher if a crew member suspects a fire. This is a useful option which would be used if the crew is alerted by smoke or a singeing smell, for example, from an electrical fault.

Other useful options include discharge alarms and automatic engine shut-down systems.
