A trimaran with two people aboard is currently being towed to safety after being in collision with an unidentified fishing vessel.

The crew of the trimaran The Ten Men after losing their mast in the collision with an unidentified beam trawler attempted to make a MAYDAY call, which was initially picked up by Portland Coastguard, but the message was faint and cut off after the MAYDAY. Coastguard Rescue helicopter 106 from Portland was scrambled to search the area. Fortunately, a Motor Vessel Tanjaalso heard the distress and was able to offer assistance, by being on scene and talking to the Coastguard. The casualtys position was 15 miles south south east of Swanage.

Portland Coastguard requested the launch of the Swanage all weather RNLI lifeboat.

Andy Jenkins, Watch Manager, Portland Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, said:

The Motor Vessel Tanja remained on scene until the lifeboat was on scene and was able to attach a tow. The two crew aboard are safe and well and will be towed in their yacht back to Poole Bay.

The appropriate authorities including the Marine Accident Investigation Branch have been informed and investigations are underway to identify the fishing vessel involved.
