Coastguard Rescue teams from St Merryn and Newquay successfully rescued a stranded beach walker tonight, in atrocious conditions, after he was cut off by the tide.

Falmouth Coastguard coordinated the rescue after receiving reports that a 52 year old man, walking from Whipsdery to Watergate, had become cut off by the tide. RNLI lifeboats from Newquay and Padstow were sent to the area alongside Royal Navy Rescue helicopter R193 from Culdrose. The walker was quickly located. However, Falmouth Coastguard decided it would be safer to bring the man up and over the cliffs at Horse Rock because of gusting Force 8 winds and head-height waves.

Marc Thomas, Falmouth Coastguard Watch Manager said:
This was an extraordinarily difficult rescue. The success outcome is a tribute to the skill of the St Merryn and Newquay Coastguard Rescue teams.

The tide can turn very quickly, so Id like to take this opportunity to remind everyone of the importance of checking weather and tide tables before you set out.
