Sea Fire FAQs
1) Can I fit a Sea Fire Extinguisher myself?
Yes, installation of the smaller stand alone extinguishers (up to size FD1000) takes approx 45 minutes. Systems over size FD1000 and larger systems with Manual Pull Cables should ideally be installed by a trained engineer. Contact the Safety Marine sales team for more details.
2) When I am measuring the volume of my engine bay do I deduct the volume of the engine to give me the space I need to cover?
No, the engine will consume some of the extinguishing agent so DO NOT deduct this from the overall volume. You can only deduct the volume of things like tanks and battery boxes.
3) Can I fit a Sea Fire extinguisher horizontally?
Yes, the smaller models (up to size FD1000) can all be mounted either vertically or horizontally. Models over size FD1000 must be mounted vertically.
4) Where should I mount the Sea Fire cylinder?
Try to avoid mounting it in a corner or hidden by surrounding equipment. The top of the cylinder should preferably have good access to open space so that the extinguishing agent can rapidly flood the whole compartment.
5) Do I need a manual release cable?
There are no rules in Europe requiring you to fit a manual pull cable on a leisure vessel. However some commercial vessels may be required to fit one by an MCA Surveyor. The optional manual pull cable gives you more flexibility and control should you suspect a fire.
6) Can I fit an alarm to the extinguisher?
Yes, the Sea Fire Disharge Alarm is an optional audible and visual alarm display that simply connects to the two wires leading out of the extinguisher valve.
7) Do I need an engine shutdown system?
On vessels such as motor cruisers and powerboats the answer is ideally YES. Modern diesel engines suck in large amounts of air and could quite easily consume a lot of the extinguishing agent before the fire is fully extinguished. An Engine Shutdown System will shut down the engines and any blowers ensuring that the extinguishing agent achieves its maximum performance. Engines can easily be re-started by clicking the Shutdown Over-Ride Switch.
8) Can I install an engine shutdown system myself?
No, ideally it should be installed by a trained engineer who can test the system properly. Contact the Safety Marine sales team for details.
