With the 2012 Olympics approaching, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency would like to give reasonable notice to Passenger Vessel Operators who wish to operate during the games to ensure that they and their vessels are correctly certified for the area in which they wish to operate.

Operators of Passenger Vessels wishing to operate in areas off Portland or on the River Thames that are outside of their vessels normal certified areas during the period of the Olympic activity in 2012 must act now in order to be granted the necessary certification and licences.

Richard Pellew, Area Operations Manager, South-East, MCA, says:

We welcome Vessel Operators being able to benefit from the possibilities of potential business opportunities that will exist during this period, but must stress that they need to be acting now and contacting the MCAs Vessel Policy Branch at Southampton with their proposals in order to seek MCA agreement and ensure that they and their vessels are correctly certified.

We will consider reasoned cases for specific, time-limited, equivalences to the technical requirements and operational limits of the regulations relating to Passenger Vessels although it should be stressed that such equivalences would only apply for a specified time during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
