A loose overturned 7ft Rib sparked a search for missing persons tonight in Southampton Water involving the Coastguard helicopter, a Coastguard Rescue Team and two RNLI lifeboats.

The overturned 7ft grey Avon inflatable was found by a dog walker at 9pm at Weston Shore, Southampton. Because the Rib had no identifying marks, and the owner could not be quickly traced, a search was launched to rule out the possibility of anyone being in the water.

The owners were finally traced at 10.15pm. They were able to confirm that the Rib belonged to them and hadnt been securely tied-up for the night.

Colin Griffiths Watch Manager at Solent Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, said:

Our search tonight was entirely avoidable and tied-up emergency crews. Owners of Ribs and yacht tenders should make sure they are secured and easily identifiable.

The Coastguards CG66 Registration Scheme enables owners to register their vessels so that, in the event of an emergency, the Coastguard can get in touch with them and their shore based contacts. More details are available on the MCA website, www.mcga.gov.uk.
