This afternoon a fire broke out on board the Motor Vessel Freedom, which was 1.5 miles off Weymouth. The vessel was carrying 11 passengers 9 of which had disabilities and 2 were carers, the vessel had 3 crew aboard.
Portland Coastguard received a Pan Pan emergency call at 1:30pm from the skipper of the Motor Vessel informing them that smoke was coming from the engine room.
The Weymouth all weather RNLI lifeboat was requested to launch and the Coastguard Rescue helicopter from Portland was scrambled to the scene. Wyke Coastguard Rescue Officers were also tasked, as well as the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service and the South West Ambulance Service.
Steve Williams, Portland Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, said:
The vessel (33foot) has now been towed into Weymouth Harbour by the lifeboat. The smoke coming from the engine room has significantly reduced. The crew and passengers aboard were met by the Fire and Ambulance Services and Coastguard Rescue Officers who ensured their safety and well being.
