Fire Fighting Appliances Applicable to Class-12 Vessels

Fire Fighting Appliances applicable to Recreational Craft over 13.7m (45ft) but less than 24m (78ft) in length that are NOT used commercially.

Every vessel of 13.7 meters in length or over but less than 24 meters in length shall be provided with:

1. (a) not less than two multi-purpose fire extinguishers to a recognised standard each with minimum fire rating of 13A/113B, or multiple smaller extinguishers giving the equivalent total fire rating (in addition to that required in paragraph 2 below);
Or
(b) a fire pump capable of delivering one jet of water with a minimum throw of 6 meters to any part of the ship. The fire pump, which need not be a dedicated fire pump, shall have one fire hose of adequate length with a suitable 6mm spray nozzle, and shall be either:
i. a hand powered fire pump, fixed or portable, outside any engine space with one fixed sea inlet connection and one outlet hose connection; or
ii. a power driven fire pump, fixed or portable, outside any engine space with one fixed sea inlet connection and one outlet hose connection; or
iii. a hand powered portable fire pump with one throw-over sea suction connection and one outlet hose connection.

2. not less than two multi-purpose fire extinguishers to a recognised standard each with a minimum fire rating of 13A/113B, and:
3. not less than two fire buckets with lanyards.

Multi-purpose fire extinguishers shall have a capability to deal with both Category-A fires involving solid materials, and Category-B fires involving liquids or liquefiable solids. Portable fire extinguishers provided in compliance with these Regulations shall be of approved types and/or technically equivalent to BS EN 3.

Fire buckets may be of metal, plastic or canvas and should be suitable for their intended service.

Summary:

From the provisions detailed above we can see that a Class-12 vessel will be required to carry one of the following fire fighting equipment inventories.

FOUR x 4kg Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers (21A/113B)
TWO x Fire Buckets with Lanyards

Inventory 2)

THREE x 2kg Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers (13A/70B)
TWO x 4kg Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers (21A/113B)
TWO x Fire Buckets with Lanyards

Inventory 3)

SEVEN x 1kg Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers (8A/34B)
TWO x 4kg Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers (21A/113B)
TWO x Fire Buckets with Lanyards
