Members of the Deal Coastguard Rescue Team were in the right place at the right time for a dog owner this evening when their Staffordshire Bull Terrier was swept into the sea, and found by the Coastguards four and a half miles along the shore.

Members of the Coastguard Rescue Team were training at their station when, at half past nine this evening, they were interrupted by a worried dog owner reporting that their dog had been washed into the sea just north of Deal Pier.

The team contacted Dover Coastguard Operations Room, who examined the tide and wind direction and estimated that the dog would have been swept towards Sandwich Bay, and so the team headed in that direction in their Coastguard vehicle. They located the dog – named Little Man – four and a half miles away, on the foreshore in front of the Sandwich Bay Sailing Club. The dog was then returned to its very grateful owner.

Dover Coastguard Watch Manager Mike Painter said:

These volunteer Coastguard Rescue Officers were at their station involved in training at the time that the dog was swept into the sea. They were certainly at the right place, at the right time for the owner of the dog, who was immensely grateful to see their pet returned safe and sound.
