Atlantic Rally for Cruisers 2009

The Event

The ARC is the world's largest annual trans-ocean sailing event. Organised by the World Cruising Club (WCC), the ARC sees more than 200 yachts set off from Las Palmas in The Canaries for Rodney Bay in St Lucia.

Safety Equipment Requirements:

The following equipment is generally mandatory for the ARC and other ocean rallies:

- Liferaft to the WCC's specification
- VHF radio
- Long range communications equipment
- EPIRB
- Radar reflector
- Lifebuoys
- Bilge pumps
- Navigation lights
- Harness
- Lifejackets
- Fire extinguishers and fire blanket
- Emergency grab bag (with recommended contents)
- Softwood plugs
- Throwing line
- High powered search light
- First aid kit and manual
- Foghorn
- Buckets
- Echo sounder and log
- Flares stored in a watertight container. As a minimum:

  • 6 red parachute flares
  • 4 red hand held flares
  • 4 white hand held flares
  • 2 orange smoke flares

The following safety equipment is also recommended:

- Dinghy and oars
- Handheld VHF
- Nautical almanac
- Charts and pilots for the route taken
- Sextant and tables
- Water resistant torch with spare bulb and batteries
- Second manual bilge pump
- White parachute flares
- Drogue or sea anchor.


Grab Bag Contents

The WCC recommends a grab bag on board which contains:

- Second sea anchor and line
- Safety tin openers
- Waterproof handheld VHF
- EPIRB
- First aid kit
- Plastic drinking vessel with measurements
- 2 Cyalume sticks or watertight floating lanterns
- Daylight signalling mirror
- Signalling whistle
- 2 red parachute flares and 3 red handheld flares
- Emergency Rations
- Emergency Drinking Water Rations
- Illustrated table of life saving signals
- Nylon string, polythene bags and seasickness tablets.
