At half past four this morning, Falmouth Coastguard received a call from the four man crew of a yacht 500 nautical miles west of the Azores via satellite telephone.

The caller reported that the vessel had suffered rudder damage and was disabled with the likelihood that the vessel would sink. The rudder had been pushed up into the hull.

A mayday relay was broadcast and the MV Esmeralda responded and was able to divert to the yacht. The ship is a Liberian registered bulk carrier.

The disabled yacht Setantii was competing in ARC Europe, a transatlantic cruising rally from Bermuda to the Azores.

The ship Esmeralda is now at the position of the disabled yacht and has recovered the crew to the ship.

Andy Cattrell, Watch Manager, Falmouth Coastguard said:

We took the call from the yacht this morning and were able to get all the information required for a rescue mission to be organised. It was fortunate that the MV Esmeralda was passing close by and was able to divert to assist the crew of the yacht.

We passed all the information to MRCC Delgada who are currently coordinating the response to this incident.
