The compass is one of the oldest, but still most reliable navigational instruments still used today. This simple device enables us to orientate ourselves to the world around us. The cardinal points and divisions of a compass rose allow the navigator to plot imaginary lines on a featureless sea, giving him the assurance that a distant horizon is the way home.
